Mattie Waugh is a former pupil of the late Mercy Hunter and her work in watercolour, oils and acrylics has become widely known through exhibitions over the last 15 years. But it is through her association with the Chest, Heart and Stroke charity that her work has been introduced to an even wider public. Ever anxious to raise badly needed funds to finance research, its committee approached Mattie to suggest that she might provide them with some winter landscapes to serve as Christmas cards.





Mattie has been a prizewinner at the exhibition organised by the Percy French Society and in 2003 she won the William Gormley Gallery Award at the exhibition of the Ulster Women Artists. She travels regularly in Ireland and visits the English Lakes each year in search of subjects. She is also fond of painting in Provence.

This was the beginning of a fruitful partnership for the charity, for the cards based on the watercolour scenes she had painted and presented to them, year by year, have proved so popular the some hundreds of thousands have been sold, many large business organisations having them over-printed for their use. Mattie has also provided landscapes for the Christmas cards of the Dublin charity, the Association for the Blind of Ireland.



She is the current chairman of the long-established Bangor Art Club and of the Monday Painters, a dedicated group of artists, expert in landscapes, seascapes and portraiture, who meet in East Belfast throughout the winter.
